What is the difference between choice and need or necessity? A need or necessity is something you have to do or have to be. Anything we make a need or necessity we typically end up resisting, resenting or fighting against. Gary Douglas, the founder of Access Consciousness, four years ago on a tele-call provided me with this distinction. He also talks about how choice creates awareness. When you shift something from being a need to being a choice then every choice you make can give you more awareness. What's the value of having more awareness? Well, the more you know about what is going on and what the dynamics that are playing out in your life and in the world are, the more ease you can have navigating.
What have you made a need or necessity in your life that if you were to shift it to being a choice would give you more awareness? For example, say if there is someone in your life that you are always giving advice to, and after talking to this person you feel drained or depleted or resentful that you took so much of your time to help them and they didn't really acknowledge you or thank you for it. This is an indicator that you've made it a need or necessity to give them advice. You have no choice, you have to do it. Often what goes along with that is some type of conclusion like, "they need me" or "no one else is there for them" or "it wont be for that much longer" or "I am the only one who can truly help them." These are called fixed points of views, conclusions, and decisions. Here are a few questions you can ask for a scenario like this. Is it true that I don't have choice? What choice do I have here that I haven't acknowledged? As you come out of the need and necessity and reclaim your choice, say in this instance, to assist this person or not, to put parameters on the time you're willing to offer them, or ask for them to contribute to your life in some way, you can receive more awareness about what your choice is creating. When it's a need, you aren't able to question whether it's actually creating what you desire. Say in this case, once you step into choice you can gain more awareness from asking questions like: what contribution am I being in their life? Is this truly assisting them? What have I noticed about their life since I took on this role, is it better, worse or the same? The more you're willing to ask questions and receive more awareness, the more clarity you can have about everything and the more ease you can have choosing what works for you. Sometimes we can get caught in a two choice universe, either it's all about me, or it's all about other people. What if there are way more choices then that? What if you can match what you most love to give with what people desire to receive. Or if you love to receive gifts, who would love to give them to you? Another thing Gary Douglas talks about is the Kingdom of We. Essentially instead of getting locked into a me or not me reality, you can expand into the energy, space and consciousness of WE. This is about including everything and judging nothing. You can acknowledge the choices that contribute to you, your body, other people, the earth and more. It's not all about you nor is it all about other people, unless you set up your life that way. Another choice is to play in the space of the kingdom of we, where everything and everyone is included and nothing is judged, where you can choose to have ease and clarity with everything, where nurturing, joy, generative energies and orgasmic energies of living are available. Would you like assistance to shift into choice and step from the kingdom of me or not me into the kingdom of we? I would love to assist you to become more aware of the choices you have, and the possibilities that are available for you that you may not yet have acknowledged or considered.
