Yesterday I was having a conversation with a man who was struggling with his body image. As we were sitting there and we asked what was different about me, it dawned on me that I don't have a body image. That's why my body can morph, shift and change at such a rapid rate. See, body image is essentially a combination of the thoughts and feelings you have about your body that you then have to assess as to whether they are positive or negative, good or bad, or right or wrong. Once the assessment is complete, you then have to decide what you're going to do about it, whether you need to change something and if so, try to change behaviors, adopt better ones, or keep yourself on track, or controlled, or doing the right thing etc. No wonder so many people are exhausted and never get to have the experience they desire to have!!
Often the advice or suggestion when it comes to body image is to try to have a better one, or essentially have more positive thoughts about your body and get rid of the negative ones. What if you don't have to have thoughts and feelings about your body at all? I do acknowledge this is potentially a very radical concept, however, when you don't have thoughts and feelings about your body, you can have a direct experience of it. In order to think something about your body you actually have to separate from it. Once you are separate from it, it becomes a thing that you try to control, or make better, or change or improve AND you won’t have access to your gifts and talents that easily change and transform it. Your body is not a thing, it is an expression of you. Once you join with it (and release the walls of separation from it), 1. It's easy to love it, 2. It's easy to choose foods that truly nourish it, and 3. Your body can finally change, because you are there with it, and can empower the change rather than force or fight for the change (and believe the lie that your body is the thing resisting). If you woke up and realized that your body was in prison and you were actually keeping it stuck there what would you do? It's time to have the keys to set your body free. Essentially our bodies have been imprisoned by the thoughts and feelings we have about them. Don't own your thoughts or ever say this is how "I" think and feel about my body, unless you want a rigid body that will have a hard time changing, healing, and transforming. Acknowledge the thoughts and feelings that you have right now, and simply wonder, what it would be like to be with your body, and not have thoughts or feelings about it? I don't expect people to get this, just know that it is a possibility. It does truly change everything and makes having a body truly joyful. It's not a thing to be objectified, used or abused. It is an expression of you that can be loved, nurtured, appreciated and celebrated.
